Against the backdrop of discussions between the Japanese and US governments on Japanese investment and lending to the United States, US-based GlobalFoundries will build 2 plants in New York State. Japan's investment in the United States is expected to reach approximately ¥3 trillion at the maximum.
GlobalFoundries, a leading US semiconductor foundry, announced plans to build 2 new plants in New York State to produce semiconductors for automobiles and industrial equipment. The investment is expected to exceed ¥3 trillion, while details such as the scale of the plants and the products to be manufactured are expected to be announced at a later date.
Japan has formulated a policy of investing up to $21 billion through investment and lending to the United States, and the construction of these semiconductor plants has been positioned as the "third phase." Tokyo Electron and Renesas Electronics have been identified as cooperating companies.
The plan is based on an agreement under which Japan would make investments and loans to the United States in exchange for a reduction in tariffs on Japanese imports last July. If the investment on the scale of ¥3 trillion is realised, the semiconductor supply chains of Japan and the United States are expected to be strengthened. The detailed timing and final investment amount remain subject to future official announcements.
