Amkor Korea announced plans to expand its Gwangju plant, investing a total of KRW 3 trillion by 2031 to develop advanced packaging production lines for AI and HPC applications. The investment is based on construction starting in the second half of 2027 and completion in the first half of 2028.
Amkor Korea, the South Korean subsidiary of major semiconductor packaging company Amkor Technology, has decided to expand its Gwangju plant and increased the total investment to KRW 3 trillion. It will establish new advanced packaging production lines for AI accelerators and HPC servers, with the investment scheduled for completion by 2031.
The investment period runs from this year through 2031, and employment is expected to increase to approximately 2,000 people. The plan, originally valued at about KRW 1 trillion, has expanded to KRW 3 trillion, and government officials and Amkor management attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The new plant will handle products for AI and HPC applications. After completing 2 buildings in the second half of next year and the remaining 2 buildings in the first half of 2028, it is scheduled to begin mass production in stages. The acceleration of the investment schedule and the faster pace of demand growth were cited as the background.
The view has emerged that, as part of the development of a semiconductor belt in southwestern Korea, Amkor will position its Korean operations as a major advanced packaging hub, intensifying competition to attract global customers.
