Stock index futures recovered ¥70,000 in midday trading and moved into the +2σ to +3σ zone of the weekly Bollinger Bands. The Nikkei temporarily approached ¥70,000 and ended trading with its gain extended.
As of 12:57 p.m., the Nikkei Stock Average was at 69,737.29, up 1,427.83 from the previous day, a gain of 2.09%.
Supported by the firmness of the US market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,176.96, up 250.40, or 0.49%, from the previous day. US dollar-yen was at 158.09, a slight rise and broadly unchanged from the previous day.
The Shanghai Composite rose 11.74 to 3,842.19. Risk appetite generally continued across equity markets.
