The Nikkei 225 traded lower by double digits in the morning session on the 16th, but rose by more than ¥200 in the afternoon. It tested its highs toward the end of the session and secured a gain on a closing-price basis. TOPIX remained in positive territory throughout the day, while Growth 250 continued to trend lower.
By sector, petroleum and coal, mining, and textiles rose, while pharmaceuticals, information and communications, and air transport declined. Central Glass surged on a company release, while Discos, Ibiden, and SaaS-related stocks showed weakness. Financial stocks were soft.
INPEX, Idemitsu Kosan, and ENEOS rose sharply against the backdrop of higher crude oil prices. Panasonic and Hitachi were bought, and the 3 major electric wire makers also rose. The performance of AI-related stocks changed throughout the session, and there is a view that market caution ahead of the U.S. FOMC outcome is not particularly strong.
