The downtrend in the Nikkei continued during the afternoon session of the Tokyo Stock Exchange on 2 October. The index opened the afternoon down ¥650.58 from the previous day at ¥68,306.14, while TOPIX was down 43.25 points at 4,088.73. Although there were periods of buying in the morning, many market participants wanted to assess the US September employment report due tonight, keeping aggressive buying in check.
Among Nikkei constituents, SoftBank Group and Tokyo Electron were among the top negative contributors, while Nissan Motor and Fast Retailing also ranked among the biggest decliners. Daikin Industries and Resonac also fell during the afternoon, adding to the overall decline.
As of the afternoon, trading volume on the Prime Market was in the 1.2 billion-share range and trading value exceeded ¥4 trillion. The yen traded slightly weaker at around ¥158 to the dollar, providing support for export-related stocks, while a sharp drop in Hong Kong stocks dampened investor sentiment. Market participants remain cautious, saying the outlook for monetary policy could change depending on the employment report.
