The Nikkei 225 stood at ¥64,276.82 at the open, down ¥994.13 from the previous day, as selling led the market amid the continued decline in U.S. equities the previous day and higher crude oil prices. Selling pressure continued across the market after the open, with securities and commodities futures and nonferrous metals among the declining sectors.
The U.S. consumer price index (CPI) was scheduled for release today, while the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) and the Bank of Japan's monetary policy meeting were due to take place next week. Investors remained on the sidelines, limiting buying. The yen weakened against the dollar to the mid-¥154 range per dollar, and there was also a view that the weaker yen and stronger dollar would support earnings outlooks for export-related stocks.
The domestic corporate goods price index for August, released that day, rose 7.6% year on year. The median market forecast was for a 7.4% increase. KOMPEITO listed on the TSE Growth Market, and it was also the SQ calculation date, with the SQ value expected to be ¥63,039.49.
Among the TSE Prime Market stocks with the highest trading value, Taiyo Yuden, SoftBank Group and Advantest declined. INPEX, by contrast, rose, making some of the declining stocks stand out on a relative basis.
