The factors behind the Bank of Japan’s accelerated pace of rate hikes included the chain reaction from rising interest rates and concerns over the Takaichi administration’s responsible proactive fiscal policy.
The Bank of Japan has gradually indicated a policy of raising its policy rate in response to economic and price conditions and adjusting the degree of monetary easing. Reports suggest that this could lead to an acceleration in the pace of rate hikes.
The Takaichi administration emphasized its policy of continuing responsible proactive fiscal policy, stating that “fiscal sustainability cannot be maintained without growth.” It was also reported that initial budget requests for fiscal 2027 exceeded a record ¥143 trillion.
Rising interest rates are having a significant impact on small and medium-sized companies’ cash flows. A credit union chief pointed out that the difficulties facing these companies are increasing as high interest rates combine with labor shortages, rising prices and other factors. Tokyo Shoko Research presented an estimate showing that the proportion of companies operating at a loss would rise if interest rates increased by 1 percentage point.
Remarks by the Bank of Japan governor and reports on the Cabinet reshuffle were also covered. The BOJ indicated that it intended to continue raising interest rates, while ministers including Finance Minister Katayama (片山) were confirmed to be remaining in their posts.
