In Tokyo trading on the 5th, the Yomiuri stock index, Yomiuri 333, rebounded for the first time in 4 trading days, closing at ¥52,128.81, up ¥1,040.35 from the previous day. Approximately 70% of its constituents rose, while few declined.
The Nikkei Stock Average fell ¥1,110.73 to ¥61,077.90, extending its losing streak to 4 sessions. AI-related stocks with a large impact on the index were broadly sold, resulting in a move contrasting with Yomiuri 333. TOPIX performed firmly, rising to 3940.39.
The market is seen as having been affected by the concentration of investment in AI-related stocks and regulatory concerns surrounding the US midterm elections. Among individual stocks, Toyota Motor rose 16.68%, Daicel 11.93% and Yokohama Rubber 11.61%, while AI and electronic-components stocks including Furukawa Electric, down 17.06%, Murata Manufacturing, down 16.58%, and Ibiden, down 16.31%, fell sharply.
Market participants also point to growing fund flows into sectors outside AI-related stocks, with domestic-demand and value stocks showing relative strength. Lower crude oil prices may also have provided a tailwind for automobile stocks.
