U-NEXT and NBCUniversal have entered into a comprehensive strategic partnership focused on the Japanese market. In addition to streaming films and drama series, the partnership covers the rollout of Universal+ in Japan, the creation of real-world experiences centered on USJ, the global distribution of Japanese content and joint marketing. The companies aim to build a new entertainment model spanning IP-led streaming, experiences and global distribution.
The rollout of Universal+ in Japan is scheduled to begin in stages from October 2026, with exclusive streaming of new releases and major drama series produced by NBCUniversal also under consideration. Through this initiative, U-NEXT will expand the value of its platform by integrating not only films, drama series and anime, but also sports, live events and e-books.
Through its collaboration with USJ, the companies aim to create new customer experiences by combining real-world theme park experiences with a paid subscriber base of more than 5 million. They are considering measures to enhance entertainment experiences beyond viewing, including the joint development of music concerts and events and the provision of member-only benefits.
For the overseas distribution of Japanese content, the companies will strengthen U-NEXT's role as a distribution hub for bringing Japanese drama series, anime, films and original productions to audiences worldwide. Using NBCUniversal's global network, they will promote the distribution of Japanese works in markets including North America and Latin America. Specific initiatives involving USJ, NBCUniversal and U-NEXT are scheduled to be announced in stages from autumn onward.
