Following the movement in US long-term yields, USD/JPY briefly stalled at around ¥158.20 in the Tokyo market on the 4th. Long-term yields rose briefly in the New York market on the back of an increase in job openings, which reached a high level, but have since been moving lower in after-hours trading.
In the Tokyo foreign exchange market on the 4th, USD/JPY moved to around ¥158.49 as of 10:00 a.m. This represented dollar strength and yen weakness of approximately ¥0.75 from 5:00 p.m. the previous day.
In the New York market on the 3rd, USD/JPY closed around ¥158.69, while US long-term yields rose against the backdrop of September JOLTS job openings reaching a four-month high. USD/JPY consequently rose as high as ¥158.77.
However, the decline in US long-term yields in today's after-hours trading weighed on USD/JPY in the Tokyo market, limiting its upside. Risk aversion was more likely to emerge amid the decline in the Nikkei 225, and USD/JPY fell to ¥158.25 at around 9:30 a.m. before subsequently showing signs of support.
In European currency movements, EUR/USD was around $1.1215 and EUR/JPY was around ¥177.76.
