Buying emerged in Nikkei 225 futures following the BOJ's monetary policy meeting, sending the Nikkei 225 sharply higher from the opening. The meeting outcome and the yen's decline against the dollar are believed to have supported stock prices.
The Nikkei 225 opened the afternoon session at ¥65,281.88, up ¥1,145.63 from the previous day. Buying in Nikkei 225 futures was prompted by the absence of any committee member proposing a 0.5% rate hike and the fact that 2 members voted against a rate hike, widening the Nikkei 225's gains. The yen's decline against the dollar also supported stock prices.
At the morning close, the Nikkei 225 stood at ¥64,662.11, up ¥525.86 from the previous day, extending its advance. Buying focused on AI-related stocks against a backdrop of gains in U.S. semiconductor stocks, pushing up the Nikkei 225, but investors also appeared reluctant to buy overall ahead of BOJ Governor Ueda's press conference, and the TOPIX fell. Trading volume was 847.13 million shares, and turnover was ¥3.6187 trillion.
At the opening, the Nikkei 225 rose again to ¥64,681.55, up ¥545.30 from the previous day. Buying led the market following gains in U.S. stocks the previous day, while AI-related stocks, particularly semiconductor stocks, supported the Nikkei 225.
Market participants believe that, while the market remains influenced by the gains in U.S. stocks through the previous day, the outlook will depend on developments in AI-related stocks and on news affecting semiconductor-related stocks.
