The Japan Market Research Center has published a report on Japan’s sake market for 2026–2033. The report covers market size, company trends, segment-level forecasts and market shares, and projects the market to grow from US$1.36 billion in 2025 to US$1.89 billion by 2033. CAGR over the period is expected to be 4.1%.
Government export promotion and manufacturing support are also identified as factors driving market expansion. According to the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, exports reached a record ¥47.5 billion in 2022, while export volume totaled 35,895 kiloliters. The major export destinations were Hong Kong, China and the US. The average export value per liter exceeded ¥1,000 for the first time in 2020, reaching ¥1,109.
Factors supporting market growth include product development incorporating new flavors and styles, lower-alcohol products and stronger promotion in overseas markets. Examples cited include businesses offering doburoku brewed on their premises and 奥飛騨酒造’s launch of an 8% product, illustrating a shift toward lighter, higher-value products.
In the domestic market, the decline in alcohol consumption among younger people and intensifying competition among alcoholic beverages have been identified as challenges. At the same time, higher-value products centered on junmai sake, craft-oriented offerings, brewery tourism and expanding overseas exports are cited as pillars of growth. In 2026, support measures for long-term transactions were also implemented in response to rising prices for sake rice.
International strategies are diversifying, with GI registration in India, the wider adoption of digital export procedures and trade fairs planned in South Korea, Spain, the UK and Hong Kong. Major manufacturers are expected to continue pursuing premiumization and creating new demand, with an emphasis on developing regional brands and expanding the value of consumer experiences.
