Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, under new CEO John Ternus. Ahead of competition in the age of AI agents, the company has positioned it as a pillar of its comeback strategy.
Apple held its new-product launch event, “Surprise and shine,” on 9 September local time. Newly appointed CEO John Ternus took the stage to unveil the iPhone Duo. Its foldable design gives it a 5.4-inch display when closed and a large 7.6-inch display when opened. The device has a titanium body, uses fingerprint authentication instead of Face ID, and is powered by the latest A20 Pro chip.
The 256GB model is priced at $1,999, while the top-end 2TB model is priced at $3,199. The price in Japan starts at ¥364,800. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on 16 October, with the product set to go on sale on 23 October in more than 70 countries and regions, including Japan.
Apple also announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max for release alongside the Duo, with prices higher than those of the previous generation. The standard iPhone 18 will not be offered this time and is expected to launch separately next spring.
CEO Ternus described the Duo as “the biggest transformation in iPhone history,” and attention is focused on the fact that he made it a flagship product just 8 days after taking office. Apple also announced a new lineup of wearables, but the Duo was the main attraction.
