As expectations grew that AI regulations would be tightened, prompted by the US midterm elections, the Nikkei Average in Tokyo fell below ¥60,000 for the first time in 5½ months, closing more than ¥3,000 lower.
The Nikkei Average fell ¥3,643.13 from the previous day to close at ¥57,434.77 on the Tokyo stock market on the 6th, dropping below ¥60,000 for the first time in 5½ months. The entire market declined, with the size of the fall ranking as the third-largest on record.
Investors became more risk-averse, and selling spread, led by AI-related stocks. Sharp declines in AI-related stocks, which had driven the market higher, were particularly notable, while semiconductor manufacturing equipment and electronic component stocks also led the decline.
Following the Democratic Party's gains in the US midterm elections, concerns grew that robust capital investment demand could slow. Selling of AI-related stocks has also continued globally, and developments in the US market affected Tokyo stocks.
