In Tokyo trading at the start of the week, the Nikkei 225 fell sharply under the influence of losses in US technology stocks, but the decline narrowed in the afternoon as investors bought stocks on dips.
In Tokyo trading on Monday the 19th, the Nikkei 225 fell, closing at ¥64,916.70, down ¥407.59 from the previous weekend. During trading, the decline temporarily exceeded ¥1,400, and the index at times fell below ¥64,000 for the first time in approximately one month.
The Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) edged up to 4,067.48, while trading volume was 2.06192 billion shares. TOPIX remained firm despite the Nikkei 225's sharp decline.
The selling was apparently triggered by growing concern in the US market that massive AI investment was putting pressure on management, leading major technology stocks to fall. AI-related stocks came under pressure in Tokyo, weighing on the broader market. Heightened tensions in the Middle East also kept US crude oil futures elevated, creating a psychological burden. In the afternoon, buying returned to stocks that had become relatively inexpensive, narrowing the decline.
