Hitachi Construction Machinery’s heavy-equipment fan community “Heavy Equipment Fandom” has won the 2026 Good Design Award. It is reportedly the first time a community has been recognized in the award’s history, which dates back to 1984.
Hitachi Construction Machinery’s heavy-equipment fan community “Heavy Equipment Fandom” won the 2026 Good Design Award, organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, a public interest incorporated foundation. The community was recognized for promoting the appeal of heavy equipment, sparking interest among younger generations and helping address labor shortages in the construction industry.
The community emerged from the company’s internal business contest, “KENKI βUSINESS CHALLENGE,” and began formal operations in 2025. In addition to online interaction, it has held 71 co-creation events, expanding cross-industry exchanges and information sharing.
The judging comments emphasized that the initiative is not about retaining fans for a particular company, but about creating a structure in which participants plan and share events, fan publications, videos and other content. The comments also noted that the community is open to society as a “culture” both within and beyond the community.
Hitachi Construction Machinery views the award as demonstrating the community’s potential to develop autonomously as a co-creation platform that connects industry and society over the long term. This is the first Good Design Award won by the community itself rather than by a product.
