On 15 October 2026, Komatsu announced that its new-generation hydraulic excavator PC138USi-12 and articulated dump truck HM460-6 had received the fiscal 2026 Good Design Award, presented by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. This marks the 6th consecutive year of receiving the award, and the HM460-6 was also selected for “My Choice 2026,” a special exhibition featuring designs chosen by the judges.
The PC138USi-12 improves practicality at urban construction sites through an expanded cab, optimized body layout and the integration of various sensors and lighting, enhancing safety and ease of use. Its design, which emphasizes the perspective of people working at construction sites, was highly evaluated.
The HM460-6 was completely redesigned with a focus on operator safety and comfort, particularly around the cab. Improved visibility and the integration of advanced technologies enhance safety and workability, while the design pursues both strength and refinement.
The Good Design Award judges commented that they valued detailed improvements from the perspective of people working at sites while respecting the high level of completion of the previous models. They particularly noted design features that improve users' visibility, including reduced blind spots in front of the vehicle and expanded glazed areas.
