Samsung announced that collaboration with Japanese companies was important in developing Flex Titanium, which supports the thinner design of the Galaxy Z Fold8 series. The structure combines a titanium alloy film with a titanium plate beneath the display to achieve both thinness and strength.
Samsung Electronics disclosed that collaboration with Japanese companies was important in developing Flex Titanium, a new display technology used in the Galaxy Z Fold8 series. The technology was realized after 7 generations of testing and prototyping, as the company pursued both a thinner design and greater durability for foldable devices. The names of the collaborating companies have not been disclosed, but the companies are said to have resolved technical challenges by sharing materials-processing technology.
Flex Titanium consists of two components: a titanium alloy film positioned beneath the display and a titanium plate supporting the display module. The film increases mechanical rigidity to approximately 20 times the conventional level while keeping its thickness to about one-third the thickness of a human hair. The plate combines wet etching, which uses a combination of micro-patterns and large openings, with laser cutting in the manufacturing process to achieve both flexibility when bent and long-term durability.
Samsung also incorporated the benefits of Flex Titanium into the overall device design, conducting a comprehensive review of the design, including the hinge and battery. The Galaxy Z Fold8 achieves a thickness of approximately 4.5mm when unfolded, while the higher-end Z Fold8 Ultra is approximately 4.1mm thick. Their weights are approximately 201g and 215g, respectively. The devices will launch in Japan on 7 August 2026, and prices for the 256GB models remain elevated.
Samsung also introduced the new technology in the battery capacity. The Z Fold8 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, while the Fold8 has a 4,800mAh battery, and both support up to 45W wired charging. The devices use silicon-carbon anodes to increase energy density, and a comprehensive redesign of the cells enabled Samsung to achieve both a thinner design and greater capacity.
