NHK has begun full-scale operations at the new “Information Building” within its Broadcasting Center in Shibuya, Tokyo, expanding its broadcasting and streaming capabilities, including the News Center and Radio Center. Production, broadcasting and streaming will be expanded in stages through September.
The Information Building is part of Phase I of a redevelopment plan to address the aging Broadcasting Center, and full-scale operations are being phased in through September. Following the introduction of new news studios and the installation of broadcasting equipment, the building will serve as a hub consolidating the production and streaming functions for news and information programs.
The Information Building houses broadcasting and streaming functions for news and information programs as well as international broadcasting, and will handle news coverage and information dissemination for audiences across Japan and overseas. The relocation of functions previously carried out at separate locations is proceeding in stages.
In addition to news programs such as “Good Morning Japan,” “NHK News 7” and “News Watch 9,” programs including “Asaichi” and “Close-Up Gendai” are also scheduled to be produced and broadcast there in the future.
As a hub for disaster prevention and risk-reduction reporting, the building features base-isolated construction and on-site power generation facilities so that broadcasts and streaming can continue without interruption during large-scale disasters, including an earthquake directly beneath the Tokyo metropolitan area.
