A hands-on evaluation of ELECOM's DST-L080BPBK, which integrates an 8-in-1 docking station and a left-hand device. The hub functions are standard, but the dial's feel and the specifications of the included cable were disappointing.
ELECOM's DST-L080BPBK combines a docking station with an 8-port hub and SD/microSD slots with a left-hand device featuring 4 keys and a dial. The direct-sale price is ¥10,980, and it is designed to sit to the left of a laptop.
The unit has a shape resembling a rectangular block cut diagonally through the center. It weighs approximately 215.2g as measured and measures approximately 74×87×59mm.
The rear has 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C ports, a USB-C port for up to 100W power input, 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, HDMI output, Gigabit Ethernet and 3.5mm audio input/output. SD/microSD slots are located on the right side. The USB-C port for PC connection supports PD and DisplayPort Alt Mode, and video output is available via HDMI.
The left-hand device comprises a dial approximately 50mm in diameter and 4 surrounding keys. The dial adjusts volume when rotated and mutes when pressed. Assignments can be changed for the upper-left, lower-left, lower-right and dial-side keys, allowing actions such as launching specific applications and operating windows to be configured by profile.
One issue is that the included USB-C cable does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode and lacks an e-Marker, making HDMI output unavailable and limiting power output to a maximum of 60W. The dial is stiff to rotate, and some users have pointed to rough implementation, including rubbing sounds during rotation and poor response from the lower-left key. Overall, the impression is that the product has a full set of functions but noticeable rough edges.
Overall, the attempt to combine hub functions and a left-hand device to save desk space is viewed positively, but the cable specifications and operating feel are said to leave room for improvement. Further improvements are anticipated.
