Across Plaza Toyama Kakeo, a mixed-use commercial complex completed on the site of the Toyama City Public Wholesale Market, has been opening in stages since the 18th. In addition to a supermarket, the retail building houses sporting-goods and drugstores, offering shoppers vegetables, fish and other products purchased directly from the market on the site.
At Al Plaza Foods Market, the supermarket operated by Heiwado, approximately 100 people lined up before opening. Visitors enjoyed shopping for vegetables, fruit and other produce shipped directly from their places of origin.
An electronics retailer is scheduled to open next week, and a “lively facilities” building based on a Showa-retro concept is expected to open in February next year.
The overall plan is centered on the market redeveloped by Toyama City and a group of businesses, with the aim of creating a community-oriented market open to local residents, according to the parties involved.
