TOSHIBA TEC CORPORATION’s “Flapper Gate,” a swing-type security gate for self-checkout area exits, has won the 2026 Good Design Award. Its slim design, low installation burden and ease of use were highly rated overall, and the award-winning product is scheduled to be displayed at an exhibition.
The “Flapper Gate,” an exit gate for self-checkout areas manufactured and sold by TOSHIBA TEC CORPORATION, has won the 2026 Good Design Award. The award recognized the product overall for its slim form and for incorporating solutions to issues such as productivity and ease of installation and removal into the design.
The product’s opening mechanism is activated by holding either a paper receipt or an electronic receipt from the Smart Receipt app over the scanner, which triggers an LED and audio signal. It supports 2 opening types: inward opening and upward-and-downward opening. By controlling whether a receipt is present and whether a reused receipt passes through, the design helps deter missed payments and reduce the burden on employees of calling out to customers. It operates on a single power supply and requires neither construction nor system integration.
The award-winning product is scheduled to be displayed at GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2026, the Good Design Award exhibition to be held at Tokyo Midtown from 31 October to 4 November 2026. The evaluation comments praised the product for being manufacturable using only sheet-metal bending, as well as its slim housing and detailed consideration extending from on-site installation through removal.
