A plan to build one of Japan's largest AI-focused data centers in Akita City has come to light, with development costs expected to be approximately ¥2 trillion. An industrial park in northern Akita City has been identified as a candidate site.
The plan is being led by the US AI-related company ビットグリット and Akita-based IT-related company エスツー. In October last year, the two companies and Akita City entered into a partnership agreement with a view to attracting an AI data center.
The data center is expected to use electricity generated by offshore wind power, while discussions are progressing on the involvement of the United Arab Emirates in the investment. The government aims to create industrial clusters centered on data centers, and 9 regions have been selected as promising locations.
On the 19th, the United Arab Emirates ambassador to Japan and others are scheduled to visit Akita and meet with Governor Suzuki (鈴木) and the mayor of Akita City.
