Akita Prefecture has announced plans to attract a data center for AI applications, with Akita-based data management company エスツー and U.S. AI startup ビットグリット at the center of the project. Support from a UAE sovereign wealth fund is under consideration for the investment.
An industrial park in northern Akita is being considered as the site, with power intake capacity expected to reach up to 500 megawatts. The project is intended to capitalize on the region's abundant wind and other renewable power generation.
Development costs are expected to total approximately ¥2 trillion, with the project to be pursued using a combination of funding sources. Operations are targeted to begin in the first half of the 2030s.
