With the arrival of Apple’s foldable iPhone attracting attention, this article compares the latest foldables from Google and Samsung. Their slimness, light weight, hinge design and real-world usability stood out.
With Apple’s autumn announcement rumored to be approaching, Google is set to launch the fourth-generation Pixel 11 Pro Fold on 20 August, while Samsung is rolling out the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8 and Z Flip8 simultaneously. This article examines the current position of foldable smartphones, incorporating hands-on testing.
In terms of slimness and weight, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra leads the comparison. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold weighs approximately 239g, compared with approximately 215g for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. When closed, the Pixel measures 10.1mm thick and the Galaxy 8.9mm, giving the Galaxy an edge in portability. The Galaxy’s hinge movement is also considered smoother.
The crease in the inner display is less noticeable on the Galaxy. Its new Flex Titanium structure is designed to improve hinge strength and reduce the depth of the crease, resulting in a difference in the feel of opening and closing the phone in daily use. The Pixel, meanwhile, places emphasis on dust and water resistance compliant with IP68 and overall durability.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 also includes a model weighing approximately 201g, offering users the option of balancing ease of opening and closing with portability. Slimness, light weight and usability are highlighted as the three key characteristics of foldables today.
