The new commercial facility HiViE Sakai-Higashi is scheduled to fully open in spring 2027 on the former Takashimaya Sakai site, with Life confirmed to open a store on the first floor. This article covers the redevelopment plans for the site and the latest information available on the tenants.
Takashimaya Sakai in Sakai, Osaka, closed on 7 January 2026. The site is planned to be redeveloped by Nankai Electric Railway into a new commercial facility. Named HiViE (ヒビエ) Sakai-Higashi, the facility is being developed as a station-connected redevelopment project that makes use of its direct access to Sakai-Higashi Station.
HiViE Sakai-Higashi is scheduled for a grand opening in spring 2027, and it has been officially announced that the major food supermarket chain Life will open a store on the first floor. The soft opening is expected in early December 2026.
At present, 34 tenants have been identified for HiViE Sakai-Higashi. Existing stores are expected to reopen after renovation or continue operating, mainly in the underground dining area. The tenants include Japanese restaurants, udon and ramen shops, cafés and other food-service businesses, as well as community-oriented stores such as banks, class providers and clinics.
The redevelopment plan is based on a policy of making use of a property owned by a Hanshin-affiliated railway company, with the aim of enhancing the convenience of the station-connected facility, centered on Life's store opening. Further updates on finalized tenants and the opening schedule are awaited.
