In the Tokyo stock market on 5 November, the SVT Index, comprising 96 fashion and beauty-related stocks, closed at 14,527.9 points, up 4.99% from the previous day, marking its biggest gain of the year. Total market capitalisation was approximately ¥48.5399 trillion, an increase of approximately ¥2.3090 trillion from the previous day.
Fashion and beauty-related stocks rose broadly, with 71 advancers, 20 decliners and 5 unchanged issues. While the Nikkei 225 fell sharply by ¥1,110.73, or 1.79%, related stocks showed signs of buying back previously sold positions.
Among individual stocks, Shiseido led the gains at 8.89%, followed by ABC-Mart at 8.64% and Yonex at 7.73%. J. Front Retailing, ASICS and Workman also posted substantial gains. Large-cap Fast Retailing made a significant positive contribution to the index.
The factors behind the move included a broadening relief rally as uncertainty receded following the US midterm elections, and sector rotation as funds moved from AI and semiconductors into domestic-demand and consumer-related stocks. The focus going forward will be on whether sustained fund inflows continue.
