NTT DATA Group, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Itochu Enex were selected for a Tokyo metropolitan government public solicitation project and will conduct a demonstration using next-generation biofuel HVO in emergency gas turbine power-generation equipment at a data center from September 2026 to March 2028. It will be Japan's first initiative to use HVO for emergency power generation at a data center.
The demonstration is being conducted under the Tokyo metropolitan government's support program for promoting the commercialization of decarbonized fuel projects, with NTT DATA Group, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Itochu Enex participating. The companies will use existing emergency gas turbine power-generation equipment at a data center and switch its fuel to HVO to verify supply stability during power outages and the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The demonstration will run from September 2026 to March 2028.
The demonstration will assess performance, operability and safety when HVO is used in emergency gas turbine power-generation equipment commonly installed at data centers in Japan. Testing, load operation and upgrades to ancillary equipment will be carried out, and the technical requirements associated with converting existing equipment to the new fuel will also be organized.
