RYOBI LIMITED developed a new structure for an aluminum die-cast automotive component and obtained a patent for technology that balances lower weight with high strength. Expanded application to suspension components is expected.
The automotive industry faces challenges including reducing CO2 emissions and extending the driving range of electric vehicles, while suspension components have traditionally been made from ferrous materials. Replacing them with aluminum die castings offers the potential for weight reduction, but it has been pointed out that replacing the material alone may result in insufficient strength.
RYOBI LIMITED developed a new structure that takes advantage of the design flexibility of die casting, placing a T-shaped reinforcing section aligned with the load direction inside a hollow cylindrical form, supported by ribs. This design efficiently increases bending strength in the load direction while limiting the increase in weight caused by the reinforcement.
The design provides the strength required for suspension components while helping reduce vehicle weight. The development aims to achieve both lower weight and high strength in automotive components, and expanded application is expected.
The RYOBI group says it will continue working toward becoming a business group that supplies formed and cast materials.
