SK hynix CEO Kwak (郭) disclosed that the company is considering deepening its cooperation with Japan's Kioxia. At the site in Indiana, U.S., where the groundbreaking ceremony was held, he said the companies were carefully considering how they could work together to develop the NAND flash memory market for customers and suppliers.
Earlier this month, an investment company led by U.S. investment fund Bain Capital emerged as Kioxia's largest shareholder after Toshiba, its former parent company, reduced its stake. SK hynix participated in the acquisition by the Bain-led consortium in 2018 and holds bonds convertible into voting shares.
Kioxia classified SK's interests as a potential conflict of interest and a risk factor. Although CEO Kwak (郭) stressed that "there is no set plan," efforts to deepen cooperation between the two companies could affect the restructuring of the semiconductor market and the future direction of competition.
No specific plans, including additional investment, have been decided, and whether cooperation will deepen and on what scale remain undetermined at this time.
