7 companies, including Nippon Yusen and Kawasaki Kisen, announce collaboration to build ammonia-fueled car carriers and a supply network. They plan to build and operate 4 car carriers, establish an ammonia supply system and complete it in 2030.
7 companies announced that they would collaborate to promote the use of ammonia-fueled vessels. They will build and operate 4 car carriers and establish an integrated supply network covering fuel procurement, storage, ship-to-ship bunkering and vessel operations.
The participating companies are Nippon Yusen, Kawasaki Kisen, JEERA, Imabari Shipbuilding, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Kyokuyo Shipyard and Japan Marine United. Shin Kurushima Dockyard will handle the basic design and part of the construction, while Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United will participate in the design and construction. Kyokuyo Shipyard will build the bunkering vessels.
The bunkering vessels will carry a total of 10,000 cubic meters of ammonia, with completion targeted for 2030. Nippon Yusen and Kawasaki Kisen will each order 2 ammonia-fueled car carriers, scheduled for completion in 2030.
JEERA will sign a contract to procure approximately 70,000 tonnes per year of renewable-energy-derived ammonia from India during the initial 5-year period, and will establish new shipping facilities at a receiving terminal near the Hekinan Thermal Power Station.
The heads of the 7 companies held a press conference in Tokyo, explaining that the collaboration aims to advance decarbonization and expand the range of ammonia applications.
