7 of Japan’s leading shipbuilding and energy companies have announced the world’s first large-scale project integrating everything from ammonia procurement to the operation of ammonia-fueled vessels. Commercialization is targeted for 2030.
NYK Line, JERA, Imabari Shipbuilding and 4 other companies have announced the world’s first large-scale project to develop an integrated system covering everything from ammonia procurement and offshore bunkering to the operation of ammonia-fueled vessels. The project is intended to create demand for ammonia and build a supply chain.
Specifically, the companies are advancing plans that include building vessels to refuel ships with ammonia offshore and operating car carriers powered by ammonia, with commercialization targeted by 2030.
Ammonia does not emit carbon dioxide when burned, but it is toxic, and its storage and transport require stringent safety measures and are challenging. Against a backdrop of China and South Korea gaining a stronger presence in the global shipbuilding market, the companies said they intend to combine their respective strengths to take on the challenge of building ships for a new era.
