A plan has emerged for GF to build a semiconductor plant as part of the third round of investment in the United States. On the Japanese side, Renesas Electronics is expected to procure materials, while Tokyo Electron is expected to supply manufacturing equipment. An official announcement is expected shortly.
A plant construction project involving GF, a major US semiconductor foundry, is expected to have been selected as the third project under the investment and financing in the United States agreed in the Japan-US tariff negotiations, with Japan's major semiconductor company Renesas Electronics expected to participate on the procurement side. GF will lead the plant construction, with investment on the scale of several trillion yen expected. Tokyo Electron is also scheduled to supply manufacturing equipment, potentially strengthening cooperation between Japan and the United States. An official announcement is expected shortly.
Renesas is reportedly considering procuring logic semiconductors used for computational processing, and announced in February this year that it would jointly manufacture semiconductors for next-generation vehicles with GF. TEL ranks fourth worldwide in manufacturing equipment sales.
The investment and financing in the United States to date comprises 6 projects totaling $109 billion (approximately ¥17.2 trillion), representing about 20% of the overall plan. Meanwhile, the Japanese government has set out a policy of strengthening economic security, including supply chain resilience, while promoting the overseas expansion of Japanese companies.
Discussions are also continuing toward structuring a project to build next-generation nuclear power facilities using small modular reactors (SMRs).
