Japan and the United States are reportedly discussing a semiconductor fab investment project in the United States worth up to ¥3 trillion, and GlobalFoundries could handle operations under Japan's US investment framework, according to reports. The investment is said to range from ¥2 trillion to ¥3 trillion, with production expected to focus on logic semiconductors.
The investment remains at the discussion stage between Japan and the United States, and key details, including the operating company, investment amount, process technology and location, reportedly have not been finalized. The framework is based on agreements reached from 2025 onward, and the US investment could reportedly be used in parallel with other domestic projects.
The project is positioned as a strategic step along the lines of the Japan-US trade agreement. The legal basis for the framework involving an exchange of tariffs and investment could change, and areas including AI and energy, in addition to semiconductors, could also be covered, according to reports.
Two related domestic projects, the Kumamoto JASM fab and Rapidus, are currently underway, and the US investment is reportedly expected to be supported under a separate framework from these projects.
