The Tokyo stock market fell for the first time in three sessions, with the Nikkei Average closing at 68,309 yen, down ¥647 from the previous day. On the TSE Prime Market, declining stocks far outnumbered advancing stocks.
Among individual stocks, SoftBank Group fell more than 5%, dragging the Nikkei Average down by approximately ¥316. Tokyo Electron also fell approximately 4%, while Advantest rose more than 4% and Fujikura gained approximately 5%. AI- and semiconductor-related stocks moved in opposite directions.
In the foreign exchange market, the yen strengthened against the dollar. The dollar-yen exchange rate rose to ¥158.22 in the morning but weakened to the mid-¥157 range in the afternoon. September core CPI for Tokyo's 23 wards exceeded market expectations, prompting investors to focus on expectations for an additional Bank of Japan rate hike.
