In the Tokyo market, the Nikkei 225 extended its gains and at one point recovered to the 67,000 range after the open. Bank stocks attracted buying, while dollar-yen rose to the upper ¥157 range as the yen continued to weaken. Semiconductor stocks were generally mixed.
In the Tokyo stock market on the 28th, the Nikkei 225 maintained a buying-led trend and continued to rise, although its gain narrowed against the backdrop of higher US stocks at the end of the previous week. It temporarily recovered to the 67,000 range after trading began, while advancers outnumbered decliners on the TSE Prime Market.
Bank stocks attracted buying, with gains in Mizuho Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. The banking sector consequently stood out among the sectors with the highest gains, possibly directing investor attention toward bank stocks.
In the foreign exchange market, dollar-yen rebounded from its morning level and temporarily rose to ¥157.86. There was speculation that it could continue trading in the upper ¥157 range in the afternoon depending on movements in semiconductor and bank stocks, keeping the yen’s weakening trend as the focus of trading.
Among sectors, semiconductor-related stocks moved in different directions. Advantest edged higher, while some stocks, including Ibiden, posted sharp declines. Although individual stocks showed a wide range of price movements, they overall helped support the Nikkei 225’s rise.
