日本車輌製造 and NEC have jointly developed an application that uses 3D data for railway rolling stock to enable the structure and equipment layout of cars to be checked using VR. A patent application is pending, and practical use is also under way.
The application enables the interior layout and equipment arrangement to be checked from the design stage, allowing design reviews that previously used prototype cars or actual equipment to be conducted in a VR environment. Use of past design studies is also planned.
For railway operators, the application can be used in a virtual environment to examine and train for the operation of individual components during maintenance, tool placement, education and training, and cleaning routes. Displaying component information and improving the efficiency of materials procurement are also envisaged.
The company plans to continue enhancing the application's functions and to develop it as a service for the railway industry. Practical application will be advanced, with the use of the application in design reviews expected to expand.
