Tesla's robotaxi vehicle, the Cybercab, has arrived in Japan. It will tour the country after its exhibition in Aoyama, Tokyo, although public-road operation has yet to be determined. Waymo is conducting an autonomous-driving field trial in Tokyo in partnership with Nihon Kotsu and others, with commercial operations targeted for 2027.
Tesla's robotaxi vehicle, the "Cybercab," arrived in Japan on 11 September 2026 and was unveiled in Aoyama, Tokyo, as part of its Japan premiere. The exhibition vehicle, a gold-colored 2-door coupe featuring upward-opening doors, was presented at the launch event.
The Cybercab is scheduled to tour Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo and Shinjuku after its initial exhibition in Aoyama, Tokyo. However, there are currently no plans to operate the actual vehicle, and whether it will be permitted to run on public roads remains undecided. Challenges remain before a full-scale autonomous-driving service can begin in Japan.
Around the same time, Waymo began a field trial of autonomous driving in Tokyo in partnership with Nihon Kotsu and GO. Data is currently being collected using Level 2 driving, with a driver seated at the wheel, while preparations continue for the future commercialization of Level 4 driverless operation.
On 15 September 2026, 3 companies, including Nihon Kotsu, agreed to a strategic partnership aimed at commercializing autonomous taxis. They announced plans to begin commercial operations in Tokyo using Level 4 fully driverless vehicles during 2027.
