Tesla's dedicated robotaxi vehicle, the Cybercab, has arrived in Japan. Following its Japan premiere in Aoyama, Tokyo, it will tour locations around the country, but public-road driving has not yet been scheduled, and 3 challenges have been identified for its future adoption.
Tesla's dedicated robotaxi vehicle, the Cybercab, arrived in Japan on 11 September 2026. The gold-colored 2-door coupe is characterized by its upward-opening doors, commonly known as butterfly doors, and its Japan premiere was held on Aoyama-dori in Tokyo. The actual vehicle is scheduled for exhibition only, with no driving planned, and public-road driving and demonstration runs in Japan have yet to be scheduled.
Following the Cybercab's arrival in Japan, Tesla plans to take it to Osaka, Nagoya and Shinjuku, while efforts to conduct autonomous-driving demonstrations and deploy the technology in society are gaining momentum across the country. Western players including Waymo are conducting real-world demonstration projects in Tokyo and are currently collecting data from vehicles operating with Level 2 driver assistance.
As part of efforts toward commercialization, it has been announced that Nihon Kotsu, Waymo and GO plan to collaborate on an autonomous taxi demonstration project in Tokyo, with the aim of launching commercial operations using fully driverless Level 4 vehicles in Tokyo during 2027. Nissan, Uber and Wayve also held a joint press conference in Tokyo, and there has been information that they aim to begin test operations in the latter half of this year.
Three challenges have been identified for the adoption of autonomous vehicles in Japan: legislation, technology and social acceptance. While discussions on the deployment of Level 4 autonomous driving in society are progressing, new vehicle formats may require new standards. In the technology field, the combined use of end-to-end AI and rule-based systems is under discussion, with differences in investment costs cited as a challenge. Regarding social acceptance, it is considered important to examine when, where and for whom the vehicles will be used.
