Mirae Asset Group has signed a share purchase agreement to acquire 100% of Sanko Securities, a subsidiary of the Okayama Securities Group. The group is expected to secure a local securities business license and fully launch its retail operations from next year onward.
Mirae Asset Group announced that, through its U.S. subsidiary, it had signed a share purchase agreement to acquire a 100% interest in Sanko Securities, a subsidiary of the Okayama Securities Group. The acquisition price is KRW 47.6 billion, and Mirae Asset Securities plans to invest approximately KRW 100.6 billion in US Holdings.
Established in 1953, Sanko Securities is a Japanese proprietary trading securities firm with net assets of approximately ¥4.6 billion as of March 2026. Although it currently faces personnel and organizational constraints on an immediate rollout of its retail business, it aims to expand its business scope by obtaining a local securities business license through the acquisition.
Through the transaction, Mirae Asset plans to secure registration as a Type I Financial Instruments Business Operator in Japan. It also has its sights on the expansion of Japan's ETF market, with a view to capturing opportunities in the NISA market and other tax-exempt investment schemes for small investments. In the past, it has strengthened the foundations of its global business, including by establishing global ETF asset management companies.
Global M&A is central to Mirae Asset's growth strategy, with 14 transactions since 2011 and total acquisitions exceeding KRW 50 trillion. Its overseas network comprises 57 locations and client assets total approximately KRW 1,512 trillion, while questions have been raised over whether the profitability of its overseas business is attributable to its core operations.
