South Korea’s Mirae Asset Securities will acquire 100% of the shares of 三晃証券, a subsidiary of Japan’s Okasan Securities Group, for approximately ¥5 billion. The transaction will proceed through a U.S. intermediate holding company, with completion targeted for March 2027. Through the acquisition, Mirae Asset Securities will assume the registration as a Type I financial instruments business operator and make proprietary trading its first business in Japan.
As of the fiscal year ended March 2026, 三晃証券 had approximately ¥4.6 billion in net assets and approximately ¥48 million in net income. Mirae Asset Securities plans to use the local company and its operating structure to retain specialist proprietary trading personnel and expand the organization. This will be its first proprietary equity trading business in the Japanese market.
The medium- to long-term goal is to attract retail customers, with retail operations using the MAPS mobile trading system expected to begin as early as next year. The companies are also discussing a proposal to sell ETFs managed by Global X to customers of Okasan Securities, and are considering expanding the use of the trading platform.
As foreign financial institutions return to Japan one after another, the transaction is expected to be completed after regulatory review by Japan’s Financial Services Agency. The move suggests a long-term business expansion strategy centered on securing a license and expanding the local presence in the Japanese market.
