On the sales front, results were affected by the recovery in demand from the food-service industry, sluggish growth in beverage demand due to adverse weather and higher prices, lower demand from paper manufacturers as a result of digitalization, and higher raw material costs due to increased import prices for corn.

The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Sales of food starch remained firm as demand from the food-service industry recovered. However, sales of saccharified products for beverages remained sluggish as adverse weather and higher prices prompted consumers to economize, while sales volume of starch for paper manufacturers also declined as newspapers and magazines shifted to digital formats. On the earnings front, operating profit increased due to lower fixed costs and other factors, while ordinary profit decreased due to lower investment gains accounted for under the equity method, higher losses on disposal of fixed assets and interest expenses, and other factors. In addition, higher import prices for corn, the raw material, increased raw material costs.
