A theme concerning the development of specifications for variable-gauge trains, or gauge-changing trains, to be introduced on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, including resistance to cold and snow, snow-melting systems and earthquake protection, with the aim of avoiding a transfer at Tsuruga. The trains were not introduced because development did not meet the opening of the Kanazawa–Tsuruga section.
