The Nikkei Stock Average closed at ¥64,136.25 in Tokyo trading on the 17th, up ¥213.25 from the previous day, while the TOPIX also rose. Although the Fed's decision to raise interest rates spread a sense of relief across the market, some AI and semiconductor-related stocks were sold, limiting the gains.
In Tokyo trading on the 17th, the Nikkei Stock Average (225) rose ¥213.25 from the previous day to close at ¥64,136.25, marking its second consecutive day of gains. In addition to trends in large-cap stocks, which are the focus of trading, a wide range of stocks, including pharmaceutical and real estate shares, attracted buying. Approximately 80% of stocks listed on the TSE Prime market rose.
A sense of relief spread among investors after the U.S. Federal Reserve Board (FRB) decided at the FOMC it held on the 16th to raise interest rates, as most of the market had expected, supporting the market as a whole. The Fed's rate hike decision was cited as one factor supporting the Nikkei's rise.
However, some AI and semiconductor-related stocks, which have a significant impact on the Nikkei, were sold. Market participants indicated that they wanted to assess the outcome of the Bank of Japan's Monetary Policy Meeting, which runs through the 18th, limiting the gains.
The Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) remained firm, rising 32.47 points to 4,094.19.
