According to the July chain-store sales overview released by the Japan Chain Stores Association, total sales were ¥1.0919 trillion, up 0.1% year on year on a same-store basis. The figures covered 45 member companies and 9,701 stores.
By department, same-store food sales were ¥788.8 billion, up 0.1%; apparel sales were ¥47.3 billion, down 1.8%; household-goods sales were ¥222.7 billion, up 3.2%; services sales were ¥2.7 billion, down 2.2%; and other sales were ¥30.3 billion, down 15.7%.
Sales of summer merchandise slowed in July because of the impact of cooler temperatures in the first half of the month, while higher in-store prices offset the decline in sales volumes. Apparel also struggled around the end of the rainy season, but total sales increased year on year as household goods remained firm.
The announcement shows a mixed trend, with food remaining firm while apparel and services declined, and the performance of each department affecting total sales.
