The Nikkei Stock Average Volatility Index (Nikkei VI) rose sharply. Buying led the Tokyo market in response to the trend in U.S. markets, but higher crude oil prices and persistently elevated U.S. long-term interest rates heightened concerns, and the Nikkei VI continued to rise.
The Nikkei VI rose 2.77 from the previous day, or 10.84%, closing at 28.32 after reaching an intraday high of 28.72 and a low of 26.27. Buying led the Tokyo market today in response to the trend in U.S. equities.
Nikkei 225 futures opened higher at the start of trading, but while downside support remained firm, upside remained limited, and concerns over rising volatility did not ease.
Amid continued uncertainty surrounding the situation in Iran, persistently elevated crude oil futures prices and U.S. long-term interest rates in overseas markets became sources of concern.
Against this backdrop, the sharp rise in the Nikkei VI indicates strong market participants’ concerns about future volatility risk, drawing attention to market movements ahead.
