The Nikkei Average started the afternoon session from a level ¥729.52 lower than the previous trading day's close. Selling pressure on large-cap stocks such as Advantest and Taiyo Yuden led to a weak opening for the afternoon session.
The Nikkei Average opened the afternoon session at ¥65,676.04 and remained in negative territory, although its decline narrowed from the morning close. Nikkei 225 futures held near their lunchtime highs and at times showed signs of recovering.
Selling preceded the afternoon opening, more so than in the morning session, while Asian stocks were also generally tilted slightly lower. Against a backdrop of partial rebounds in the KOSPI, some large-cap stocks in the Tokyo market were at times trading slightly higher.
Among the TSE Prime Market stocks with the highest trading value, Advantest, Taiyo Yuden, SoftBank Group and Murata Manufacturing were among the decliners. Kioxia Holdings and Fujikura, meanwhile, traded slightly higher, while machinery, securities and commodity futures, and electric appliances were among the sectors showing the steepest declines.
Across the market, selling pressure prevailed at the afternoon opening, but the Nikkei Average also traded in a narrow range centered around ¥65,250, with Asian market conditions continuing to influence trading.
