Distinctive smartphones are gaining momentum in the Japanese market, with diversified sales channels creating benefits for consumers. ZTEジャパン announced the mid-range gaming smartphone nubia Neo 5 GT on 21 April.
New smartphones are being launched in rapid succession, adding more distinctive models that capitalize on the strengths of their respective manufacturers. As the Japanese smartphone market becomes increasingly undifferentiated, attention is focused on what changes are emerging.
On 21 April 2026, ZTEジャパン, the Japanese arm of China’s ZTE, announced the nubia Neo 5 GT, designed as a gaming smartphone. It features a cooling fan, a 6.8-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM and a Dimensity 7400 chipset. Its regular retail price is ¥52,800 including tax.
The Nubia Neo 5 GT features the “Demi 2.0” AI function, which assists gameplay, and is positioned as a mid-range model that emphasizes gaming performance. ZTE indicated that it aims to make gaming smartphones available to more people by applying technology from its REDMAGIC brand.
The domestic launches of high-profile models including Google’s Pixel 10a and OPPO Find N6 were officially announced in April, intensifying competition in Japan’s smartphone market.
