Nippon Steel announced plans to build an electric arc furnace at U.S. Steel’s Slovakian site. The investment will total €900 million (approximately ¥160 billion), with operations targeted to begin in 2030 as the company expands its supply of green iron to Europe.
Nippon Steel will build an electric arc furnace in Slovakia. The total investment will be €900 million, of which €350 million will be provided as a subsidy by the Slovakian government.
The new electric arc furnace will have annual production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes, and an oxygen plant will also be built at the same time. The project is intended to expand the supply of green iron in the European market.
The site has 3 blast furnaces with total production capacity of 4.5 million tonnes. The new electric arc furnace is scheduled to begin operations in 2030, and the existing blast furnaces are expected to be considered for idling in conjunction with the furnace’s startup.
Nippon Steel completed its acquisition of U.S. Steel in 2025, and operations at the Slovakian site are expected to be conducted going forward through Nippon Steel’s affiliated company NSSK.
