A hybrid powertrain centered on a V6 twin-turbo engine is reportedly the leading option for the next-generation Nissan GT-R super sports car, with a concrete announcement potentially coming as early as 2028.
The next-generation GT-R is reportedly more likely to use a hybrid powertrain than to become a fully electric vehicle, and a Nissan executive has indicated that an announcement is expected by 2028. The current R35 is said to end production in August 2025, with a transition to the next generation anticipated. The new model could substantially modify the internals of the VR38DETT engine and evolve into a new-generation electrified powertrain. While a plug-in hybrid is also under consideration, a conventional hybrid is viewed by some as more practical because of the challenges posed by additional weight and cooling.
The standard model is reportedly expected to produce around 800–900 PS, with the NISMO version potentially reaching around 1,000 PS. Advanced traction control using all-wheel-drive control is also anticipated. The design may retain traditional GT-R elements while incorporating the advanced styling seen in Hyper Force. Based on comments by Nissan's North American executives, the model is being considered for a 2028 announcement and a 2029–2030 market launch.
